The city of Nador hosted a participatory workshop on Monday, July 27, 2026, as part of the project to establish a marine reserve in the province of Nador, within the marine spatial planning program launched by the State Secretariat for Maritime Fisheries and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, with support from the World Bank.
The initiative is part of national commitments to conserve marine biodiversity and develop a sustainable blue economy.
The workshop brought together representatives of public administrations, institutions, fisheries professionals, research institutes, territorial communities, civil society, and various marine and coastal actors.
The proceedings presented the marine spatial planning methodology and its progress, shared elements of the territorial diagnosis, identified challenges, use conflicts, and development opportunities, and collected observations from stakeholders.
The program aims to develop a common vision for the future of the marine space in the province of Nador, based on environmental data and socio-economic needs.
Special attention was given to sensitive habitats, spawning and nursery areas, sustainability of fish stocks, and expectations of professionals and coastal populations.
Marine spatial planning is a strategic approach to organize uses coherently and sustainably, balancing fishing, aquaculture, maritime transport, tourism, and environmental protection.
Marine reserves play a key role in protecting biodiversity and restoring fish stocks, without excluding human activities but organizing them.
