Spain reinforces military presence off Moroccan coast

Spain has stepped up protection of its military presence on the Chafarinas Islands, the Al Hoceima rock and Badis Island off the Moroccan coast in recent weeks, upgrading infrastructure, power systems and water desalination.
The moves come amid a tense security context, particularly after the Ceuta migration crisis in late July.
Defence Minister Margarita Robles held direct contacts with troops deployed at these sites on 2 September.
King Felipe VI convened army chiefs on 8 September to discuss the situation in Ceuta, while the European Commission announced 114.7 million euros in support for Spain to boost border control.
These enclaves remain sensitive points in Spanish-Moroccan relations, as Morocco claims them and rejects their status as Spanish territory.
