Successful trials of reinforced nets against dolphin attacks in Al Hoceima

The first field trials of reinforced purse seine nets, developed by the National Institute for Fisheries Research, have proven their effectiveness in protecting small coastal fishing boats from attacks by the large dolphin locally known as 'Nikro'.
The results were evaluated during a meeting held at the maritime fisheries annex of Al Hoceima province, attended by professionals and representatives of the National Fisheries Office, the Institute, and the regional council of Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima.
The trials involved three sardine fishing boats in the ports of Al Hoceima, Jebha, and Ras El Ma, and began last July.
The president of the Mediterranean Fisheries Chamber, Mounir Darraz, confirmed that the results were positive and satisfactory, with reduced damage and improved incomes for the boats.
The national coordinator of the project, Mohamed Malouli Idrissi, said that the new nets showed better resistance despite some tears.
Professionals approved the nets and called for their extension to 57 additional units, with a draw to distribute them to beneficiary boats.
The technique is expected to be rolled out across the region within one to one and a half years.
