The Nador court of appeal is under a heavy security deployment as Moussa Azghanghan and 28 other defendants are brought before the king's prosecutor general over the riots in Al Aaroui.
Authorities have made special arrangements to secure the court's surroundings given the sensitivity of the case and its impact on local public opinion.
The prosecution is expected to present the defendants to the prosecutor general to determine the nature of the charges and subsequent legal steps, in a closely watched procedure.
The developments come amid ongoing investigations into the Al Aaroui protests, which turned into violence and led to a broad security campaign, multiple arrests and an in-depth judicial inquiry.
