The upcoming opening of the new regional hospital in Selouane coincides with growing debate over the future of health services in Nador, amid fears of a possible closure of El Hassani hospital and its impact on access to care.
Unions and rights groups have called for keeping the emergency department in the city and creating a proximity hospital to ensure continuity of services.
They warn that moving services to Selouane would impose extra travel on residents of Beni Ansar, Al Hoceima, Farkhana, Bni Chiker and Bni Sidel.
The new project, whose works are about 98% complete, provides 250 beds over 161,000 square metres at a cost of around 560 million dirhams, with specialties including surgery, intensive care and emergencies.
