Mohamed El Haj Salem Amziane: a political journey from the Rif to exile
This text traces the life of Mohamed El Haj Salem Amziane, a national political figure born in the village of Aït Boukhraf in the Rif, educated at Al Quaraouiyine University in Fez and a teacher in Taounate.
Arrested at the start of independence, he later led the 1958-1959 Rif uprising, which was harshly suppressed.
He remained in contact with national political figures during his exile and died in the Netherlands in 1995.
The activist Abraham Serfaty and his wife worked to bring his remains back to Morocco, where he was buried in Al Hoceima after a heavily attended funeral, before being laid to rest in his native village.
