West Med Towage boosts fleet with three tugs for Nador West Med

West Med Towage, a subsidiary of the Boluda group and in partnership with Marsa Maroc, has announced the reinforcement of its fleet with two new ASD-type tugs, named VB Betoya and VB Reef, to which a third tug named VB Gourougou will be added.
These units, built at the Damen Song Cam shipyard in Vietnam, will be dedicated to accompanying maritime traffic at the port of Nador, and later to supporting operations at the Nador West Med port, whose commissioning is scheduled for 2027.
Each tug is approximately 28 meters long and 12 meters wide, and is equipped to provide towing, maneuvering, and berthing assistance services, essential functions for the safety of large vessels.
This investment comes as part of the expansion of Moroccan port infrastructure, as Morocco relies on the new port to strengthen its container and bulk cargo transport capacities.
Data indicates that the tug VB Gourougou appeared in August 2026 in the Indian Ocean, heading towards the Red Sea from Singapore.
This step reflects that port development is no longer limited to the construction of quays and terminals, but encompasses an integrated system of equipment and supporting maritime services.
Other African countries have also benefited from new tugs, including Tunisia, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Guinea, within a broader dynamic of maritime services on the continent.
