Al Hoceima prepares to install first prototype of reinforced Chinese nets against dolphin attacks
The city of Al Hoceima will host a coordination meeting on Thursday, July 9, 2026, initiated by the president of the Mediterranean Sea Fisheries Chamber, to launch the experimental phase of the reinforced Chinese nets project, developed to address damage caused by attacks of the black dolphin 'Necro' on fishing gear.
This meeting follows the announcement by the company in charge of the project of its readiness to deliver and install the first prototype, a step aimed at reducing recurring losses caused by these attacks, which have become an economic burden on fishing vessels.
The prototype will be installed aboard the fishing vessel 'Maachi 3', registered under number 203-2, for sea trials, to assess the effectiveness of this technology in protecting fishing equipment.
This project is part of a partnership agreement signed in Tangier in 2024 between the Ministry of Agriculture and Sea Fisheries, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, and the National Institute for Fisheries Research, with a total amount of 90 million dirhams over two years, to support the acquisition of purse seine nets resistant to dolphin attacks.
