Risk of major seismic faults threatens Driouch province with repeated tremors

The province of Driouch experienced several earthquakes over the past week, the latest on Sunday with a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale, according to the National Institute of Geophysics.
Geodynamics researcher Ali Charroud explained that the region lies in a triangle where the Nekor fault, extending to the Mediterranean, meets the Algerian Boumerdès fault, making it a seismically active zone.
It also sits at the boundary of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, whose convergence reactivates major faults.
Experts say these tremors will continue because the earth releases its energy, and they cannot be controlled or predicted.
They stress the need to educate the population, especially in schools, on how to act during earthquakes and to map seismic risks.
The national network recorded two earlier quakes of magnitude 3.2 and 3.6.
