Heightened security measures against migration candidates in Nador and new measures near Melilla
The Royal Gendarmerie services in Nador have intensified their security measures to counter irregular migration attempts and prevent storming of the fence surrounding the occupied city of Melilla.
Security presence has been reinforced at several checkpoints in the province's communes, with stricter checks on cars and buses arriving in Nador, as part of preventive measures to detect and intercept migration candidates before they reach the border area.
The services have arrested several individuals suspected of preparing to migrate; they undergo identity verification and registration of personal data and fingerprints before legal procedures.
The maritime gendarmerie has also stepped up patrols on beaches near Melilla and the Chafarinas Islands.
In Beni Ensar, the area is on heightened security alert against possible new collective crossing attempts, especially after recent events that led to the closure of the border crossing for about 36 hours.
The operations resulted in the arrest of about 150 migration candidates, including 70 from sub-Saharan Africa, and three individuals for facilitating migration.
About 100 people have been arrested for the riots, including 11 minors.
