Spanish general's visit to islets off Al Hoceima reignites controversy

Spanish General Julio Salom Herrera, commander of the Canary Islands, made an inspection visit to the Spanish islets off the coast of Al Hoceima, a step seen as a political and military message.
The visit comes amid controversy over the status of Ceuta, Melilla, and the islets, after US reports described them as "administered by Spain but located on Moroccan territory." Spanish military sources said the visit aimed to inspect surveillance and presence activities of units stationed there.
Madrid considers these enclaves part of its defense system in the western Mediterranean, due to their strategic location on the Alboran Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar.
The rock of Badis is considered one of the most sensitive points due to its proximity to the Moroccan coast.
