Spanish report: Moroccan ports threaten competitiveness of Spanish ports
The Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies has warned of the growing competition imposed by Moroccan ports, especially Tanger Med and Nador West Med, on Spanish ports.
The report states that the development of these ports is part of a state project linking port activity with industry, investment, and logistics services.
In 2025, Tanger Med port handled about 11.1 million containers, surpassing the combined traffic of the ports of Valencia and Algeciras.
The report attributes this superiority to the industrial and logistics system surrounding the port, including free and industrial zones hosting international companies.
With the entry into operation of Nador West Med port, the study anticipates a strengthening of competition in the western Mediterranean.
The report urges Spain to adopt a coordinated strategic perspective to face this transformation, warning of a decline in the competitiveness of ports on the northern shore.
