Over a million pupils start school in Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region

About 1.039 million pupils have enrolled in institutions under the regional academy for education and training of Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima for the 2026-2027 school year, nearly 34 percent of them in rural areas.
The year is marked by continued implementation of the 2022-2026 roadmap, through a stronger educational offering, expansion of the pioneer schools model and support for educational and social infrastructure.
Sixteen new schools and three new boarding facilities were created, bringing the total number of boarding facilities to 166, while pioneer schools now number 907 and coverage of pioneer middle schools exceeds 51 percent.
Preschool education has 4,182 classes attended by about 73,000 children, and more than 34,000 teachers deliver lessons, including 1,882 new graduates of the regional centres for education professions.
Academy director Wafaa Chaker said enrolment reached 93 percent by 22 September, against 75 percent at the start of the school year, and noted that new buildings cut the share of overcrowded classes from 5 to 3 percent.
