Women's representation at stake in Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima elections
With the legislative elections set for 23 September, the issue of women's representation is back in the spotlight in the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region.
In the Tanger-Asilah constituency, 22 local lists are competing, only two of which are headed by a woman, while 19 lists were filed for the regional constituency reserved exclusively for women.
An academic argues that the rise in the number of female candidates is an important quantitative step but politically limited, since it rests more on the quota system than on genuine promotion of women's leadership.
An association leader notes that women account for around 36.47% of candidacies, but their presence is concentrated in the regional lists and does not exceed 16% on local lists.
