The local prison in Selouane is in a state of high tension following the deterioration of an inmate's health after he swallowed batteries in his cell to protest what his relatives describe as negligence and administrative harassment.
Inmate Abdelouahed Boutarfas is currently in critical condition at the Oujda University Hospital, having not received timely medical care.
The incident follows a hunger strike he staged to protest a ban on bringing in the Eid basket, which sparked anger among inmates and their families.
Human rights groups are demanding an immediate and impartial investigation, holding prison authorities responsible for the deterioration, amid total official silence.
