In the summer of 1921, after the Spanish military collapse at Annual, the military airfield of Selouane found itself besieged by Rif fighters.
The kasbah and the airfield were two separate positions, both coming under mounting pressure.
Water and ammunition became a critical problem, as the well outside the airfield was exposed to fire.
Aircraft from Melilla attempted to drop supplies, but the siege tightened.
On 2 August the aerial resupply efforts continued; the next day the airfield fell, followed by the kasbah on 4 August.
