Culture Ministry orders study to restore Borj El Hammam in Zaio

Culture and Communication Minister Mohamed El Aaraj said, in response to a written question from MP Ibtissam Maras, that the regional culture directorate for the Oriental region will carry out a diagnosis and study of the historic monument Borj El Hammam in Zaio to determine restoration and maintenance measures.
The minister specified that listing or registering the monument falls under Law 22.80, which requires a proposal from a local commune or association.
Regarding the Selouane kasbah, he noted that the regional directorate prepared a diagnostic study on its state of decay and identified urgent interventions to rescue and rehabilitate it.
As for its listing as national heritage, the listing commission met on 31 March 2016 without deciding, pending the opinion of the National Commission for Military History, which did not respond to the competent services' requests.
