Morocco's Institute of Geophysics recorded a magnitude 4.5 earthquake on the Richter scale off the coast of Driouch province, in the Rif region.
The tremor struck at 00:32:42 local time, at a depth of 25 kilometres, at the intersection of 35.458 degrees north latitude and 3.573 degrees west longitude.
There was no immediate information on possible casualties or material damage.
The Rif region experiences recurring seismic activity due to its proximity to the boundary between the African and Eurasian plates.
