Scientific Clarifications on Red Coral Exploitation off Al Hoceima

Moroccan authorities have issued scientific clarifications regarding the decision to open red coral exploitation in the Toubou area off the coast of Al Hoceima, emphasizing that it is not a full opening but a limited and regulated exploitation.
The decision comes after nearly two decades of a ban and following a six-month scientific study by the National Institute for Fisheries Research, which showed that the coral biomass is in good condition.
Measures include setting a minimum extraction size, controlling the fishing quota, reducing the exploitation duration, and monitoring fishing effort.
A "sentinel fishery" system involving professionals in data collection will be adopted, with strict monitoring through vessel tracking systems.
Exploitation zones will be delineated by precise geographic coordinates to avoid any overlap with the Al Hoceima National Park.
The approach aims to balance the interests of fishermen and the protection of this sensitive resource, with the possibility of suspending the activity if necessary.
