The granting of the nomination to Mahammadi Touhtouh for the elections within the Istiqlal Party in the province of Nador has sparked widespread controversy.
Said Toumi, president of the Oulad Settout commune, expressed his displeasure with the way the file was handled, stating that activists from the Zaio, Oulad Settout, and Ras El Ma regions have accumulated years of struggle and should have been present in the candidacies.
Toumi indicated that he contacted the advisor to the party's secretary-general, and got the impression that the leadership is looking for new faces.
This incident raises the question of the relationship between the central leadership and the local base, and whether renewal justifies bypassing veteran activists.
The conflict seems set to escalate as the elections approach.
