Appeal Court Upholds Conviction of Wife Who Expelled Husband in Al Hoceima

The Al Hoceima Court of Appeal upheld the first-instance ruling convicting a woman of expelling her husband from the marital home.
The lower court had sentenced her in April to two months in prison, a fine and civil damages in favour of the husband.
The events date back to March and sparked widespread local debate.
With the appeal ruling, the sentence becomes final unless a cassation appeal is filed.
Moroccan law, through the Family Code and the Penal Code, explicitly criminalises expelling a spouse from the marital home or refusing to allow their return, in order to protect family stability and the mutual rights of spouses.
