Demolition of historic Azghanghan barracks walls sparks outrage

The demolition of the walls of the historic Azghanghan barracks in Nador province has sparked widespread outrage among residents and civil society.
Local authorities began tearing down the walls, which had stood for more than a century, using a bulldozer.
Civil-society actors view the site as a living memory of Rif history and recall similar attempts against other landmarks such as the nautical club, Casa Pisca and the Campamento watchtower.
They urge the relevant institutions to shoulder their responsibility for protecting heritage and collective memory, and to open dialogue with residents before any decision.
