New nets to protect Al Hoceima fishermen from dolphins
The maritime fisheries delegation has launched a pilot phase to equip fishing boats with ring nets resistant to dolphin attacks at the ports of Al Hoceima, Jebha and Ras El Ma.
The project aims to reduce the heavy losses caused by the large dolphin, known locally as "Nik Rou", which tears fishing nets while hunting for fish.
The initiative is part of a partnership signed in 2024 with a budget of 90 million dirhams, bringing together several ministries and institutions, including the National Institute for Fisheries Research and the National Fisheries Office.
The trial will last one month in Al Hoceima before being gradually rolled out, at a rate of three nets per month to reach around 60 over two years.
